Unless you’re lgbtq+ or cerain ethnic minorities, or elderly without children, or an only child with all your parents and grandparents still living.

Honestly they’ve made a lot of progress economically, but if your aren’t socially average, or rich the system is not great.

im in a giant chinese chat server filled with trans people, and none of them are homeless. they are shocked when i tell them about how many homeless trans people are in my other american chat server. even the chinese trans people who are really bad off were given a plot of land by the government to live on (this trans person bought a camper trailer and hooked it up to electricity and plumbing on the government-given plot)

it is true that access to medical care is difficult for trans people in china, but their basic necessities are provided for as part of a universal grant to all of china’s population. plenty of trans people in america, including friends I know, have died of destitution and would have lived if they were given a plot of land to live off of.

Not being forced to be homeless is a good thing, but in china that is only because the government chose to provide for everyone. Being unrecognized, and merely tolerated without legal protections means that leaders can decide that being queer is illegal now because they “are just perverts corrupting our youth”

Watching whats happening in the us right now is a great example of why it’s important. Having legal protections means that in order to harm the community, leaders have to strip away those protections, and face a fight every step of the way.

I’m really trying to pull my head out of the western media bubble. Do you have a link to the server you can share?

There are issues with LGBTQ people in CHina, but they’re not really worse than Japan for example. Not good, because there is no official support or recognition (except at the local level), but no one really cares, especially not the government (except trans people – they do get treatment & support)
