I don’t know about actually retouching photos, but I don’t know any digital artists that have used Photoshop in a long, long time! There are a TON of alternatives for art.
Maybe they’re sending you photoshop files because that’s the ‘industry standard’, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re actually working in photoshop. Lots of other editors are able to read and save photoshop files.
I draw cartoon porn mostly but the SFW comic artists I know all abandoned Photoshop, too. I wonder if Loish still does? She was huge on deviant art back in the day.
there really is no reason. even corporate owned free affinity can read all photoshopnfiles. gimp is finally getting better but not there yet.
